This weekend marks the 75th anniversary of kristallnacht—"night of broken glass"—when Nazis instigated an overnight rampage in which some 1,000 synagogues and 7,000 Jewish-owned businesses were destroyed in Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia.
Mark Hetfield, HIAS' President & CEO, draws connection between that horrible event and refugee protection in an opinion piece published in today's Los Angeles Times.

Six members of the House of Representatives recently shared their family's immigration stories with the Jewish Social Justice Roundtable. Strikingly, all six believe that under today's broken immigration system, their ancestors would not be able to come to the U.S. today. Learn more and read their stories.

HIAS' Senior Director of Policy & Advocacy Melanie Nezer discusses how the U.S.'s "material support" law unfairly categorizes Syrian refugees as terrorists in this article from philly.com. The law applies even to those who provide non-violent aid—such as a "bowl of rice or a few dollars"—to the rebel groups that the U.S. is actively supporting.

HIAS recently was one of four groups allocated money by the Jewish Coalition for Disaster Relief to aid refugees fleeing Syria's two-year-old civil war. This JTA article discusses that coalition, as well as the other partnerships that have formed in the Jewish community in response to the Syrian crisis.

HIAS is one of four groups that yesterday were allocated money to aid Syrian refugees fleeing Syria's two-year-old civil war. More than $100,000 was distributed by the Jewish Coalition for Disaster Relief, a group of 49 organizations coordinated by the JDC. Read more in the Forward and the Jewish Press.
