Senate Democrats to Jews: Help us on budget, defending Obama

The JTA covered last week's meeting between two-fifths of the Democrats in the U.S. Senate and representatives from a number of Jewish groups, in which the senators appealed to the Jewish community to help pass a budget and defend President Obama from charges that he is not supporting Israel. The Forward yesterday published an article discussing an often overlooked population: the estimated several thousand Jews living as illegal immigrants in the United States. HIAS' Gideon Aronoff pointed out in the article that, like other undocumented populations, "they are largely invisible.”

Lost in America on World Refugee Day

To mark World Refugee Day, the Huffington Post today published a post by HIAS' Mark Hetfield in which he illustrates the need for immigration reform by describing the experience of one "lucky" asylee who, following a three-month incarceration by the Department of Homeland Security, was released without any means of supporting himself, allowed neither public assistance nor authorized to work until his asylum hearing months away.

‘The Free World’ by David Bezmozgis
