Search Service Fees
A search for people who were assisted by HIAS within the last year is free of charge.
Basic Search – $30
This includes a basic search of arrival records in the HIAS database (1909 to the present). Shipping and handling are included.
NOTE: The arrival year should be specified. If that information is not available, specify a range of search years. The $30 fee covers 2 consecutive years; each additional year is $5.
A search for the case file is available for an additional fee:
- $10 if the case file is on HIAS’ premises;
- $50 if the case is in the HIAS warehouse (reparation claimants pay a reduced fee of $10);
- $60 if the case is in the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.
Fees include copying the case file; if the number of pages in a file exceeds 25, an additional fee of $0.25 per page will be charged.
The fee for an arrival record search must be paid in advance and is non-refundable.
Comprehensive Search/Location Service – $100 +
This includes a non-refundable $30 application fee and a $70 search fee that will be returned if no information is found. The person(s) sought must give consent for contact information to be released to the inquirer.
Please send us two checks, in the amounts of $30 and $70.
NOTE: Should your request require additional labor -- which may include, but is not limited to, searches of other databases, archives, libraries, extensive correspondence with other organizations, etc. -- you will be charged $30/hour (not to exceed 10 hours). In some cases there are additional expenses to cover the services of other agencies. We will notify you if these additional charges apply.
Search Abroad – Fees Vary
This includes a non-refundable $50 application fee and a $50 search fee that will be returned if no record is found.
Please send us two separate checks for $50.
All checks or money orders should be payable to HIAS.
Disclaimer: Although we do our best to find a document or locate a person, we cannot guarantee success. If we locate a person we cannot release any information to the inquirer without permission of the person(s) sought. Inquirers may review only their own file. Other requests are handled on an individual basis. For more information, please contact Sherly Postnikov.
