Temporary Program Assistant—Scholarship Department

HIAS' Scholarship Department currently is seeking a temporary, part-time program assistant.

Established in 1974, the HIAS Scholarship Program has awarded thousands of immigrant and refugee students in the United States and Israel with millions of dollars in scholarship support. For the 2011-2012 academic year, we launched our new HIAS Scholars program, an evolution of the HIAS Scholarship Program that provides recipients with opportunities for professional, personal and leadership development.

The program assistant will address most of the daily administrative, research, and communication needs of the program. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, handling applicant and recipient inquiries; outreach to universities, religious organizations, community organizations, and the press to inform relevant communities about the scholarship program; organizing and assessing applications; preparing for scholarship orientations, ceremonies, and other events as needed; managing guest lists; researching for fundraising and development; and assisting with minor financial and budgeting tasks.

Applicants should have at least 1-2 years administrative experience, preferably in a non-profit environment, and have a professional phone manner. Applicants must be well-experienced in the use of the complete Microsoft Office software suite, including Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook. Applicants must be experienced in the use of Google Groups and Google Docs, including in the creation and use of Google Forms. Experience with Adobe Connect or other webinar software is a strong plus. All applicants must speak English; familiarity with Russian or Farsi preferred but not required.

The position is approximately three days a week, with additional time required immediately following the end of the scholarship competition and immediately before the scholarship orientation and ceremony. A competitive hourly rate will be offered. A commitment is required from January to mid July, with preference for candidates with the ability to make a longer time commitment.

Send cover letter and résumé to scholarship@hias.org. Responses will be sent only to those individuals selected for interviews. No phone calls, please.
