Since 2004, the Lautenberg Amendment has helped over 40,000 religious minorities flee persecution in Iran. HIAS has assisted thousands in this process, including many Jews, who faced dangerous journeys and obstacles along the way. The Baltimore Jewish Times recently profiled several refugees who benefitted firsthand from the Lautenberg Amendment and spoke with staff from HIAS’ affiliate organization in Baltimore. The article also highlighted a meeting that HIAS participated in with President Obama regarding immigration reform during which HIAS President and CEO told the President that there is no reason why a piece of legislation like the Lautenberg Amendment should be at risk every year.
