Many Indigent Refugees to Lose Federal Assistance

The New York Times consulted HIAS' Melanie Nezer for Saturday's story on the impending expiration of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for more than 3800 refugees. Congress has not taken action to extend the eligibility period, and now the most vulnerable refugees — all of whom escaped persecution or torture — will lose their benefits on October 1, 2010.
