On Tuesday, as part of the Jewish Disability Network, HIAS cosponsored Jewish Disability Advocacy Day in Washington, DC. Each year, Jewish Disability Advocacy Day raises awareness of issues related to individuals with disabilities and their families, and presents the opportunity for participants to learn about relevant public policy issues and to advocate on those issues with elected officials. Among other issues, the Jewish Disability Network advocates for an extension of Social Security Income (SSI) benefits for elderly and disabled refugees, asylees, and some humanitarian immigrants who risk losing their benefits because they are not able to become U.S. citizens within seven years.
