Yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing entitled “Asylum Abuse: Is It Overwhelming Our Borders?” Expert panelists included Lori Scialabba of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Daniel Ragsdale of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Michael Fisher of Customs and Border Control (CBP), and Ruth Wasem of the Congressional Research Service (CRS). In his opening remarks, House Judiciary Chairman Goodlatte (R-VA-6) suggested that the United States’ “record of generosity and compassion to people in need of protection from war, anarchy, natural disaster and persecution” has caused the system to become subject to abuse and fraud “when people seek to take advantage of our generosity and game the system by identifying and exploiting loopholes.” Read the statement of Mark Hetfield, HIAS’ President & CEO, submitted for entry into the official record.
