Last week, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) introduced the Strengthening Refugee Resettlement Act (H.R. 651) which would update the refugee resettlement program to better meet the needs of refugees arriving in the U.S. and the communities that welcome them. In addition, Rep. Mike Honda (D-CA) introduced the Reuniting Families Act (H.R. 717) and a bipartisan group of Congressmen led by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) introduced the Uniting American Families Act (H.R. 519). Both measures seek to alleviate lengthy wait times that keep legal immigrants separated from their loved ones overseas, specifically eliminating discrimination in immigration law against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans and their foreign-born partners.
