Senate Judiciary Committee to Hold Briefing on Syrian Refugee Crisis

This afternoon, Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), assistant Majority Leader and Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Human Rights, will hold a hearing on the plight of the nearly 2.3 million refugees who have fled Syria since the outbreak of the civil war. Witnesses—including Anne Richard, the State Department’s Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration; Nancy Lindbord, USAID’s Assistant Administrator for the Bureau of Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance; and Molly Groom, the Department of Homeland Security’s Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Policy—will discuss the scope of the humanitarian crisis, including significant obstacles to humanitarian assistance and challenges facing host nations, as well as prospects for the United States in accepting Syrian refugees.
