Building Bridges for Human Rights in Europe

From September 23 to 26, HIAS Kyiv and UNHCR RR Kyiv brought a small group of national judges and lawyers from refugee-assisting NGOs to Strasbourg, France to familiarize them with the Council of Europe institutions in Strasbourg—particularly the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), which is an important source of European legal standards in the area of asylum. As Ukraine is party to the Council of Europe, it participates fully in the development of these standards and is also bound by them.
The study visit allowed the judges to develop first-hand knowledge about these institutions and how they contribute to the development of legal standards in the area of asylum. HIAS believes the visit will also aid them in formulating a national level refugee law curriculum for judicial professional development with a strong footing in European asylum law.
The study was funded by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Ukraine.
