Gender Discrimination and Statelessness Event

Posted on Wed, Aug 07, 2013 at 15:51 pm

Earlier this afternoon, HIAS staff, including Rachel Levitan, Senior Counsel for Refugees and Migration, attended today’s briefing on gender discrimination and statelessness. Sponsored by the Women's Refugee Commission, Equality Now, and InterAction, panelists discussed gender discrimination in nationality laws – legislation that prevents women from acquiring, changing, retaining or passing on their nationality to their children and/or their spouses on an equal basis with men – and the problems that this creates. Read remarks by Kelly Clements, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State at the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration on how non-governmental organizations are helping to fight these laws.
