This afternoon, journalist and human rights activist Meron Estefanos discussed the violent kidnappings of Eritrean refugees in Sinai. These refugees, who attempt to reach Israel or Europe by walking through the lawless Sinai Peninsula, are often seized by local authorities and sold to Bedouin tribes. These traffickers then attempt to extort the families of the kidnapped for ransom, and often torture the refugees while they are being held. Listen to a recent episode of "This American Life" featuring Meron Estefanos and her work to help these refugees.
