This week, HIAS met with leaders, activists, immigrants, refugees, and fellow integration professionals at the 6th annual National Immigrant Integration Conference. Plenary sessions addressed the role of naturalization in immigrant integration, the creation of the National Office of New Americans, the power of reform, and more. Session tracks highlighted the challenges and accomplishments in the areas of human capital development, maximizing active citizenship, building organizational capacity in anticipation of a path to citizenship, rights, and freedoms, and receiving communities. Special guest Congressman Luis Gutierrez was one of many guest speakers and honorees providing important updates on immigration reform and other initiatives in the field and inspiring us all to continue our hard work. We look forward to another year of action and the 7th annual National Immigrant Integration Conference in Los Angeles in 2014. Learn more and sign on to a letter encouraging USCIS to lower the naturalization fee, the biggest barrier preventing eligible immigrants from becoming citizens.
