On October 2, Valeriya Lutkovska, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, and Aleksandr Galkin, HIAS Country Director for Ukraine, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation. The Memorandum provides for cooperation in major areas of work pertaining to refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless persons in Ukraine, including rights protection, awareness building about their rights in society, provision of legal aid, and consulting. In addition, counteraction against discrimination, xenophobia, and other forms of intolerance is outlined as an important area of cooperation.
“The international organization HIAS works to improve the situation of asylum seekers in Ukraine and has managed to help many of them. The Office of the Commissioner also takes care of the asylum seekers’ rights protection; so, in my opinion, by putting together our efforts we can develop a cooperation mechanism and solve effectively problems which emerge in this sphere,” Valeriya Lutkovska said in her introductory remarks.
