Panel Addresses LGBT Asylum Issues on Capitol Hill
Posted on Wed, Jan 08, 2014 at 9:29 am
Later today, Mark Hetfield—HIAS’ President & CEO—will speak on a panel of experts on the subject of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) asylum seekers at a briefing on Capitol Hill. Hetfield and other panelists will discuss how various obstacles—such as the one-year filing deadline for asylum applications and the so-called “detention bed mandate”—place LGBT asylum seekers at risk of further abuse and mistreatment. Hetfield will be joined on the panel by Royce Bernstein Murray of the National Immigrant Justice Center, Rochelle Fortier Nwadibia of Private Courts International, and Max Niedzwiecki of the LGBT Faith & Asylum Network, as well as LGBT asylum seekers and service providers, with introductory remarks offered by Congressman Mark Takano (D-CA-31).
