Presidential Nominees Discuss Immigration in Town Hall Debate

Posted on Thu, Oct 18, 2012 at 10:41 am

In Tuesday night's town hall presidential debate, President Obama and Governor Romney were asked a question about immigration. Governor Romney said that "we welcome legal immigrants into this country." He expressed support for streamlining the legal system, issuing visas for immigrants with science and math degrees, stopping illegal immigration, and an employment verification system. He objected to "amnesty" and issuing driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants. He suggested that children who came to the U.S. illegally could have a pathway to legal status by serving in the military. He also criticized the President for failing to promote immigration legislation. The President noted that "we are a nation of immigrants," and that "we're also a nation of laws." He said that he streamlined the legal immigration system, increased the border patrol, and prioritized criminals over other immigrants for deportation. He criticized Governor Romney for opposing the DREAM Act and "encouraging self-deportation." Read the transcript.

Yes I have mixed feelings too. I mlesyf am an immigrant but became a US citizen in 2001. School is expensive for many not just Alien minors. Even though I am doing well I am not sure if I can afford to send my children to a good college/university..I work hard every day and have worked and paid taxes for many years I think I deserve help to send my kids to college also it should not just be available for illegal immigrants! Many of us seem to forget that USA is a melting Pot full of immigrants. The Europeans were immigrants also when the Mayflower landed. We all came here for a better future from other places or at least our ancestors did. The financial aid should be available for all students that achieve and want to go to college and can't afford it not just for alien minors
