This Wall Street Journal article offers a chilling look into the human smuggling rings that capture Eritrean refugees as they cross Eritrea's border in order to extort family members in Africa, Europe, and the U.S. Those kidnapped endure torture and rape and -- if their family members can't pay -- are found mutilated and dead in the desert or simply "disappear."
