HIAS Op-Ed in the Washington Jewish Week: Jewish Values, Refugees, Lost Opportunities

Israel's ongoing policies toward the nearly 60,000 Africans seeking asylum from oppression and violence represent lost opportunities to demonstrate Jewish values to the world, argues HIAS' Mark Hetfield in his Washington Jewish Week Op-Ed.
Israel recently missed another chance to lead by example when the Knesset responded to Israel High Court's ruling to strike down detention provisions for asylum seekers by establishing camps that require check-ins three times a day, with violators moved to prisons.
Hetfield calls on the American Jewish community to "encourage our friend, Israel, to lead by example on Jewish values about the treatment of others, particularly the persecuted and the stranger among us."
