(New York, NY) – HIAS, the international migration agency of the American Jewish community, applauds Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) for the introduction late last week of a sensible bill to provide a comprehensive overhaul of the immigration system.
“The bill would require undocumented immigrants to register, go through background checks, pay taxes, and study English on their way to becoming U.S. citizens,” says Melanie Nezer, HIAS’ Senior Director for U.S. Policy and Advocacy. The bill would also enhance national security by focusing enforcement and security measures on the most dangerous threats to our communities. According to Nezer, “Allowing immigrant families to be reunited with their loved ones allows those who work in our country to be more productive members of our society while also contributing to the overall stability of our communities.”
HIAS, and its coalition partners within We Were Strangers, Too: the Jewish Campaign for Immigration Reform, advocates for immigration legislation that establishes smart border protection and humane enforcement policies; promotes our country’s economic interests; protects human and civil rights; keeps families together; creates pathways to citizenship for undocumented immigrants; creates a plan for future migration flows; and empowers immigrants to fully integrate into American society by enabling local governments and community organizations to provide services like English classes.
