HIAS Releases Statement in Response to Ruling by Federal Judge on Controversial Arizona Immigration Law

(New York, NY) – HIAS, the international migration agency of the American Jewish Community, issued the following statement from President and CEO Gideon Aronoff in response to U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton's ruling today on Arizona's SB 1070:

"We commend Judge Bolton for calling into question the constitutionality of Arizona's ill-conceived immigration law. The law would cause all Arizonans to live under a cloud of suspicion and fear and lead to immigrant distrust of the police.

"While today’s news is encouraging, we caution that Judge Bolton's ruling is only a preliminary action and does not put an end to the possibility of widespread racial profiling in Arizona. We look forward to a court decision that permanently halts this law.

"The U.S. cannot possibly achieve a fair and functioning immigration system without comprehensive immigration reform at the federal level that includes a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States, reunites long-separated families, meets our country's employment needs, and includes smart and effective enforcement policies. The misguided attempt by Arizona to create its own immigration system underscores this fact.

"We call on President Obama and Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform as swiftly as possible. The fabric of American society depends on a system that treats newcomers equitably and humanely, and a country with 50 separate laws would merely create a fractured disunity."
