Psychosocial Care Professional – Chad

HIAS, Inc., the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, one of the oldest immigration and refugee assistance organizations, is recruiting Psychosocial Care Professionals to be part of its team providing psychosocial assistance and community services for Darfurian refugees in eastern Chad.

The HIAS Psychosocial Initiative for Darfurian Refugees in Chad seeks to strengthen refugees’ psychological and social conditions and to convey skills needed to survive and function in the aftermath of extreme violence. The goal of the Initiative is to prepare the refugees to re-assert control in their lives and successfully transition to a long-term solution for their situation.

Specific duties include:

  • Plan, coordinate and offer psychosocial care and community services to refugees of all ages through individual and group counseling.
  • Coordinate community education sessions on a variety of topics, including stress, its signs and symptoms, coping skills, loss and grief, child trauma and abuse, sexual and gender-based violence, conflict resolution, and peace education.
  • Supervise a team of local staff and refugee mobilizers.
  • Monitor and evaluate the program’s effectiveness.
  • Work with partner agencies in the provision and referral of services.
  • Develop training materials.
  • Provide weekly reporting on activities.
  • Attend stakeholders meetings.
  • Ensure services are offered in a professional and ethical manner.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, or its equivalent with relevant experience in the provision of emergency psychosocial care to individuals experiencing PTSD; three years or more professional experience in a reputable organization/institution; extensive experience in facilitating group therapy and training; and specializations in children’s mental health. Education counseling or conflict resolution is desired.

Candidates must be proactive and good team players with excellent cross-cultural interpersonal skills and the ability to work under minimal supervision.

Experience providing psychosocial support to women and children and  working in a refugee camp under insecure, challenging, and harsh conditions is desirable.

Language requirements:

  • Very good knowledge of written and spoken English.
  • Fluent in French or Arabic

Computer skills:

  • Proficient in MS Office

The post is unaccompanied and is offered on a one year basis, renewable according to mutual agreement. The successful candidate will be expected to take up the appointment as soon as possible.

HIAS Young Leaders Coordinator - Los Angeles

HIAS, Inc., the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, the oldest international refugee serving agency in the U.S., seeks a part-time Los Angeles Young Leaders Coordinator to oversee and grow a HIAS Young Leaders chapter in Los Angeles.

The LA Coordinator will organize all aspects of the HIAS Young Leaders Los Angeles chapter including recruiting/retaining members and implementing fund-raising projects, educational programming, advocacy, and community service initiatives. The LA Coordinator also will work with other HIAS Young Leaders chapters around the country to create cross-chapter programming, as well as plan and facilitate HIAS' West Coast Scholarship Ceremony.

The successful candidate will have 2+ years volunteer management experience, preferably with young professionals and students in a Jewish communal setting; proven success establishing volunteer groups from the ground up; ability to attend evening and weekend meetings/events; excellent interpersonal skills; a high level of cultural sensitivity; the ability to work independently; excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; proficiency with Windows-based computer systems; and a bachelor’s degree in a related field a plus.
