4th Annual HIAS Young Leaders Advocacy Mission - January 2007
Young Leaders from New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, and Chicago convered in the nation's capitol to be a unified voice for refugees and immigrants. Participants learned how to advocate effectively and then lead lobby visits at the White Houe and at eight Congressional offices. Individuals from the Advocacy Mission met up with the HYL DC Event Committee at a fundraiser for HIAS Ecuador one evening of the Mission.
Latin Dreams - March 2007
110 people gathered at K Street Lounge to raise funds for HIAS' program in Ecuador. The event featured Latin treats, specialty Latin drinks, salsa lessons, and a raffle with 4 prize packages each valued around $600. The event raised $4800 for HIAS' program assisting Colombian Refugees.
Conflict in the Congo - February and July 2007
The Advocacy Committee put together an event screening two films and featuring an educational panel in order to highlight the genocide in the Congo, which has taken more than 4 million lives. 65 people attended our first event at the DC JCC and 100 people attended our follow up event at Busboys and Poets.
Develop Yourself as a Jewish Activist - June 2007
HIAS partnered with AVODAH and Jews United for Justice to develop leadership skills of young professionals within the Washington Jewish community. This event featured workshops such as Balance, Jewish Text & Activism, and tzedeka.
2nd Annual HYL Outreach BBQ - June 2007
Representatives from all HYL Committees joined together in Chinatown to welcome new members into the group. Attendees enjoyed grilled chow while learning about HIAS' programs.
Sahara Gold - October 2007
130 attendees join HIAS Young Leaders at 18th Street Lounge for an evening of live reggae music and drinks to raise funds for Sudanese refugees. Sahara Gold featured a map game to encourage interaction between participants and to educate individuals on HIAS' program in Chad. The event brought in $2500.
Iraqi Refugees in Crisis - December 2007
HIAS Young Leaders hosted our second alternative Saturday night to educate our community about current refugee topics. 65 people came out from 11 PM-1 AM to learn about the Iraqi Refugee crisis at Busboys & Poets. After screening four short film clips, we heard from a panel including Kirk Johnson, founder of the List Project, Zahira, an Iraqi refugee recently resettled to the U.S., and Mark Hetfield, Senior VP of HIAS.
