| Spouse of a U.S. Citizen
If a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) is married to a U.S. citizen, when can she apply for naturalization? If a Lawful Permanent Resident is married to a U.S. citizen, the LPR may be eligible to file an N-400 Naturalization Application after three years of residence in the United States, instead of the usual five. To qualify for this earlier filing, an LPR must meet all three of these criteria:
1. The applicant must be an LPR for at least three years; and
2. The applicant must be married for at least three years to the U.S. citizen; and
3. The citizen spouse must have been a U.S. citizen throughout the three years of the qualifying marriage.
