Queen Esther's Ball Purim @ Room Service - March 2008

On Saturday, March 22nd, HYL Celebrated Purim in style at 'Queen Esther's Ball' party at Room Service.

Over 100 HIAS guests attended our pre-party and enjoyed an open vodka bar, hammentashcen, and great music. HIAS' proceeds from the evening will benefit the HYL Communal 'Seeds' Award, a scholarship fund that assists a young immigrant in the NY area. A Day of Fun with Bukharian Teens in Queens - February 2008

On Sunday, February 24th, HYL joined JCCA Bukharian Teen Lounge participants in a one-of-a-kind cultural exploration.

The day began at the teen lounge in Forest Hills where volunteers presented the organization and its work to the teens. All participants shared their own migration stories and various paths to America. The group had lunch together at a traditional Bukharian restaurant, where the teens also taught HYL traditional Bukharian dance. After lunch, we all took the subway to the Bukharian Jewish Museum where the teens guided us through the history, culture and customs of the fascinating Bukharian community.

'Seeds' Tu B'shvat Party - January 2008

On January 22nd, 100 HYL and friends came together to celebrate Tu B'shvat at Retreat.

Themed drinks and dried fruits were accompanied by music and conversation. Proceeds from the party planted the seeds for a HIAS Young Leaders NY communal scholarship award, an educational scholarship that will help a young immigrant in the NY Metro area. The Iraqi Refugee Crisis - January 2008

Speakers Mark Hetfield of HIAS, Kirk Johnson of the List Project and Khalid Abood, an Iraqi refugee, gave an overview of the Iraqi displacement
crisis.

With over 4.6 million displaced persons in Iraq and neighboring countries, this is one of the most pressing humanitarian issues of the day. The need to help Iraqis who have aided US forces and are now in danger was also a central topic in the discussion. Over 50 people attended.

Immigration 101: 'Entry denied' - Material Support - January 2007

Young Leaders and friends came together to learn about the topic of Material Support Provisions and their negative effect on refugees and asylum seekers.

Speakers Mark Hetfield of HIAS and Eleanor Acer of Human Rights First provided an overview and demonstrated how overly broad and unjust
security definitions can hurt those in distress for reasons beyond their control.

Purimlicious after work Purim Party - February 2007

Over 130 young professionals and graduate students gathered at Black Door to kick off Purim festivities with HIAS Young Leaders.

Surrounded by masks, hamantaschen and other Purim treats, guests celebrated the miraculous rescue of the Jews in Persia from Haman's plot, in this symbolic event to raise funds for today's persecuted Persian religious minorities en route to the US.

Discovering America with Bukharian Teens - March 2007

A group of HIAS Young Leaders met a lively group of teens from the
Bukharian Teen Lounge program in Central Queens.

Together, we explored the great world of American television while taking a tour of NBC Studios. We later had a special lunch and got to know one another. Both teens and volunteers had a great time!

Immigration 101: 'A Safe Haven' at the JCC - May 2007

HIAS Young Leaders partnered with the JCC on the Upper West Side to present the topic of the US Refugee Program - the basis for its existence, as well as an overview of its structure, challenges and advantages.

We screened segments of 'Rain in a Dry Land' about the resettlement of Somali Bantu and heard from HIAS Staff and affiliates who work on resettlement of refugees today.

Resume Assistance for Immigrant Job Seekers - June 2007

25 job seekers and volunteers came together to work on resumes.

A short resume revision training for volunteers was followed by an hour of one-on-one sessions between volunteers and job seekers, who were matched according to their professional backgrounds. Volunteers did a fantastic job providing job seekers insights and edits to their resumes, and many stayed in touch to further assist their job seekers with additional advice and event contacts.

Cocktails @ Duvet - August 2007

Over 220 people attended this great after work cocktail party for a HIAS program assisting Iranian refugees in Vienna.

Members of the young Persian community were joined by young leaders and friends from diverse backgrounds and together toasted for a better future for Persian religious minorities en route to the US. A Middle Eastern flair was provided by DJ Amir who spinned great tunes for the dancing crowds.

LES Side Scavenger Hunt with Bukharian Teens - October 2007

A group of HIAS Young Leaders met on the LES with immigrant teens from the Bukharian Teen Lounge in Central Queens.

After a fascinating tour of the Tenement Museum, mixed groups of volunteers and teens embarked on a scavenger hunt of the neighborhood, following clues that led them to different landmarks of immigration history. After the game, participants had a fabulous lunch together. It was a great opportunity to help newcomers while learning about immigration history in our city.

Latin Dreams for Colombian Refugees @ Manor NYC - October 2007

HIAS Young Leaders and friends came together to salsa, drink and schmooze for Colombian refugees in Ecuador.

A presentation of the HIAS program in Ecuador was followed by a salsa lesson. While sipping Mojitos and munching on Colombian Empanadas, guests got to practice their newly acquired moves....It was a Latin Dream come true!
