HIAS Announces 2007 Scholarship Competition
Application Deadline is March 15, 2007
Dec 5, 2006
NEW YORK – HIAS, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, invites students
to apply for its 2007 Scholarship Awards Competition. HIAS-assisted
refugees who immigrated to the United States after Jan. 1, 1992 are
eligible to apply.
“A HIAS scholarship recognizes your achievements and inspires you to
reach your dreams,” says Alla Paskovaty, a former recipient. “Receiving
this scholarship for me was so special, because it recognized my
achievements as a member of this special group – Jewish immigrants. It
reinforced that despite the malevolence you may encounter, you can
succeed and be surrounded by people who will stand up for you and cheer
as you become successful.”
The HIAS Scholarship indeed has special meaning, explains Gideon
Aronoff, president and CEO of HIAS. “Like Alla Paskovaty, each
recipient represents the HIAS mission of rescue, resettlement and
reunion in a very personal way,” he says. “They have fled places where
they were not welcome, and have found a home of freedom in America or
in Israel. This scholarship is an important way the Jewish community?s
generosity helps these remarkable young people achieve their full
potential.”
The HIAS Scholarship Program has been helping HIAS-assisted
immigrants pursue higher education since 1974. Last year, $1,500 awards
were given to 150 deserving students living in the United States.
Awards are made possible by generous donations from individuals around
the world, many of whom were helped by HIAS themselves. This year the
U.S. Scholarship award amount will be $2,000.
The HIAS scholarships are intended for high school seniors who plan
to pursue post-secondary education and students of all ages already
enrolled in college, university or graduate school programs. All
applicants must demonstrate at least one year?s attendance in an
American high school (12th graders only), college, or graduate school.
Recipients are selected on the basis of academic excellence, financial
need, and Jewish communal involvement.
Students should apply directly online. Further eligibility requirements and the online application form can be found at http://www.hias.org/usscholarship2007.
The online application must be submitted by midnight EST of March 15,
2007. Information about the contest in Israel is also available on the
HIAS website.
