Jan 4, 2007

New
York City – HIAS, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, has selected a
seasoned fundraising professional with extensive experience in the
Jewish community as its vice president for membership and development.

“We are delighted to have Susan Milamed join the HIAS team,” says
Gideon Aronoff, president and CEO of HIAS. “Her background in
fundraising as well as her experience in the Jewish community, make us
very optimistic that we will be able to reach new goals as we face an
ever-changing, uncertain world.”

Milamed says she looks forward to working with HIAS “to create a
development plan that will help HIAS to fully realize its mission and
respond to quick changing situations around the world. HIAS is all
about helping people to chart their own destinies, and giving people
opportunities that help them become all they can be.”

Before taking the new role at HIAS, Milamed served as vice president
for development and planning at the World Union for Progressive
Judaism, where she was responsible for North American operations. She
is the former assistant vice president for development at Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of Religion, where she directed its $135
million comprehensive capital campaign. Milamed also served as a
community board coordinator for the New York City Mayor’s Office of
Management and Budget where she assisted community leaders in
identifying and advocating for local budget priorities.

Milamed earned an MA from Columbia University and an AB from Boston
University, where she graduated magna cum laude. She has taught
workshops on fundraising, grant writing and proposal development for
New York University, City University of New York and the World Union
for Progressive Judaism, among others. Milamed also has conducted and
published research on the growth of mutual aid associations among
Yiddish-speaking Jewish immigrants in New York City. She lives with her
husband and son in New York City.
