(Washington, D.C. – April 27, 2005) – HIAS, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, is forming a Washington, D.C.-area chapter of the “HIAS Ambassadors,” a group of volunteers aged 50 and over who will meet occasionally to discuss issues affecting HIAS’ work around the world. An Open House is scheduled for Tuesday, May 17, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the HIAS Washington D.C. Office, 2020 K St., NW, Suite 7700.

“In recent years as we’ve traveled around the country, we’ve noticed a strong interest – from people over 50 especially – in our traditional
mission of rescue, resettlement and reunion of refugees and asylum-seekers,” says Leonard Glickman, president and CEO of HIAS. “The
most common question we get is, ‘How can I get involved?’ This is a way. Who better to help us spread the word about what we are doing
today than people with sincere interest in this cause, and a strong desire to make a difference in the lives of immigrants?”

The 123-year-old organization, headquartered in New York City since 1881, has offices around the world, including Washington, D.C., Vienna, Moscow, Kiev, Tel Aviv, Nairobi and Buenos Aires.

With input and guidance from HIAS professionals and board members, the Ambassadors will develop their own agendas and strategies to help refugees and other immigrants seeking freedom. The open house will include a brief presentation and short film about what HIAS is doing today. Participants will learn how their involvement can play a meaningful role in the lives of oppressed people around the world.
