New
York City – an informative book tailored specifically for
Russian-speaking Americans entitled, The Road to Success: A Community
Leadership Handbook, has been updated and is now available through
LOREO, Local Russian-speaking Émigré Organizations, a project of HIAS,
the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. Funding for the book came from a
grant made to LOREO by the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which is
part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The book both guides and encourages Russian-speaking
refugees who are seeking to become more involved with their community.
Moving concisely through an impressive range of topics, it begins with
general information on the basics, such as Naturalization and Voting,
and moves on to provide guidance on advanced political ventures, such
as 10 Steps to Starting a Nonprofit Organization and Public Speaking,
and Building Online Communities, covering 10 separate topics in all.

“This book will help LOREO and HIAS fulfill their missions of
helping this refugee community in becoming engaged and empowered
members of American society,” says Marina Belotserkovsky, director of
Russian communications and community outreach at HIAS. “We are pleased
to get this groundbreaking book into the hands of people all over
America who we know will use it to accomplish great things for their
communities.”

As is discussed in the book’s introduction, the intention of the
book is to address what is generally acknowledged to be the
Russian-speaking community’s need to increase its level of activity in
American civic society. As the community has grown to become one of the
most educated and financially successful immigrant groups, the only
obstacle now impeding its deeper involvement in American political life
is the dearth of accessible information – a hole which the Community
Leadership Handbook seeks to fill.

In this sense, the book fully embodies the mission of LOREO. HIAS
founded LOREO to create, among Russian-speaking community-based
organizations, a national network that would link separate groups and
facilitate the sharing of knowledge and information.

The book is double-sided to include both Russian and English text.
