The HIAS Latin America office has established itself as the preeminent expert among Jewish organizations on immigration and resettlement issues throughout the continent. In this role, HIAS advises and consults in many events, meetings, and congresses held in Latin America among the leading Jewish organizations on the continent. HIAS closely monitors events in the region as they affect Jewish communities. Each year, HIAS makes several fact-finding trips in teh region to solicit the views of members of the Jewish community. HIAS Latin America has a strong reputation in the Jewish community and among its clients for providing technical expertise in migration matters. During the Argentine crisis in 2001, HIAS Latin America played a key role providing information and migration assistance to thousands of Jewish people who were interested in leaving Argentina and finding new homes in Jewish communities in other parts of the world. To that end, HIAS acted as liaison between the migrants and the communities planning to welcome them. Thanks to HIAS' support, 1307 people migrated to countries such as Italy, Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil, Chile, Spain, and Israel. Today, HIAS continues to advise Argentines and other Latin Americans on migration options. In addition, HIAS, in cooperation with Jewish Immigrant Aid Services (JIAS), provides orientation and facilitates the migration process of Latin American Jews interested in living in Montreal and Winnipeg, Canada. So far, 273 people have migrated to those cities with the assistance of JIAS and HIAS. The HIAS Latin America office also carries out a Program for the Resettlement of Colombian Refugees in Argentina and oversees programs for refugees in Ecuador and Venezuela. |
