Ecuador

An estimated 250,000 Colombians are in Ecuador. Approximately 34,000 have been registered by UNHCR. Many are too fearful to seek assistance. Reaching a durable solution to their displacement, which would provide the refugees with the opportunity to rebuild their lives, requires that they be prepared to integrate peacefully with their Ecuadorian hosts, repatriate to Colombia under conditions of dignity and security, or resettle to third countries.

For these options to be successful, the mental health of the refugee community must be addressed. The HIAS program in Ecuador provides direct psychological services to survivors of torture and trauma, in groups and individually, according to need. It also assists their recovery through therapeutic, community-based education and recreation programs that address needs of refugee survivors, particularly children, attempting to re-integrate into their communities.
