Scholarships

The 2008 Scholarship competition is now closed.

Thanks to all of the applicants. Winners will be announced by May
15, 2008.

In 1974, Edwin Shapiro approached HIAS to establish the Richard Alan
Shapiro Scholarship Fund in memory of his son, whose life was cut short
in a tragic car accident. Soon after, Norbert Schimmel stepped in and
created a major scholarship fund to honor his son. What these two
generous men started has grown into a flourishing program of hundreds
of Scholarships awarded each year in the U.S. and Israel, provided by
people like them who want to assure HIAS refugees will have a chance to
contribute to their adoptive country through the opportunities afforded
only by advanced education.
