Scholarships

In 1974, Edwin and Claire Shapiro approached HIAS to establish the Richard Alan Shapiro Scholarship Fund in memory of their son, whose life was cut short in a tragic car accident. Soon after, Norbert Schimmel created a major scholarship fund to honor his son.

What these three generous individuals started has grown into a flourishing program of hundreds of scholarships awarded each year in the U.S. and Israel, provided by people who want to ensure HIAS refugees can contribute to their adoptive country through opportunities afforded only by advanced education.
