Ellerin, Hon Betty. W.An associate justice ofthe Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York since 1985, the first woman to be appointed to that court and to serve as its presiding justice (in 1999), Betty Weinberg Ellerin has lead a distinguished career. Among the many accomplishments of her career, Judge Ellerin served as Chief Administrative Judge for the Courts of the City of New York, responsible for the operation of all the trial courts within New York City; and, in one post, she helped reduce the backlog of cases involving the City, moving 4,500 cases through the system during a two year period.

In addition to HIAS, where she's served as a board member since 1964, Judge Ellerin is active in many organizations, including the National Association of Women Judges, of which she is a past president, Women's Bar of the State of New York, Association of the Bar of the City of New York and New York University, where she is a trustee. The recipient of numerous professional awards, Judge Ellerin earned her BA cum laude from New York University, and her JD from that university's School of Law. She and her husband, Milton, have three children and two grandchildren.
