A Backpack, a Bear, and Eight Crates of Vodka book coverLev Golinkin, author of the memoir "A Backpack, a Bear and Eight Crates of Vodka" (Random House, 2014), discusses his family's 1989-90 journey from Ukraine to the United States and reflects on the role HIAS played in their resettlement during an appearance at HIAS headquarters in New York City, December 22, 2014.

The book, Golinkin's first, has been widely praised, including by The New York Times, which called it a "hilarious and heartbreaking story of a Jewish family’s escape from oppression....whose drama, hope and heartache Mr. Golinkin captures brilliantly."
