Next week, two historic refugee summits will take place in New York. On Monday, September 19, the United Nations will convene the UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants, marking the first time heads of state will gather to specifically address assisting refugees. The following day, President Obama will hold a Leaders’ Summit on the Global Refugee Crisis, to take leadership to protect the safety and dignity of millions of refugees worldwide.
Ahead of these two momentous meetings, HIAS CEO and President Mark Hetfield and HIAS VP of Policy and Advocacy Melanie Nezer briefed nearly two dozen members of the foreign press at the New York Foreign Press Center of the U.S. Department of State. In addition to explaining their hopes and expectations related to the two summits, Hetfield and Nezer answered several questions from the press regarding what can be done to help the world’s more than 65 million refugees and displaced persons.
The briefing, which took place on Tuesday, September 13, was attended by members of the press from countries including Colombia, Great Britain, Russia, South Korea, Japan, Sweden, Serbia, Brazil and Senegal.
