Join HIAS for a monthly program offering compassion and solidarity to asylum seekers in detention through a formal letter writing program with individuals who have requested correspondence, helping them access hope and connection.
HIAS partners with CIVIC, an organization committed to ending isolation and abuse in U.S. immigration detention. HIAS volunteers will be matched with individuals in CIVIC’s “Pen Pal” database – specifically, with asylum seekers who have requested compassionate correspondence with others, because they are placed in detention centers that do not have in-person visitation programs. At each monthly program, volunteers will both handwrite letters and participate in a short learning session that reflects on refugee and asylum issues through a Jewish lens. All letters will be sent from and received at HIAS – volunteers will not be asked to provide personal addresses. Participants must be 18 or older.
