HIAS/Freedom for Immigrants Letter Writing Program
Please complete an application (or log in if you've previously done so) and RSVP here. Exact location in midtown Manhattan will be sent out a week prior to the event.
Join HIAS for a monthly program offering compassion and solidarity to asylum seekers in detention by writing letters to individuals who have requested correspondence, helping them access hope and connection.
HIAS partners with Freedom for Immigrants, an organization committed to ending isolation and abuse in U.S. immigration detention. HIAS volunteers will be matched with individuals in Freedom for Immigrants' “Pen Pal” database – specifically, with asylum seekers who have requested compassionate correspondence with others, because they are placed in detention centers that do not have in-person visitation programs. At each monthly program, volunteers will both handwrite letters and participate in a short learning session that reflects on refugee and asylum issues through a Jewish lens. All letters will be sent from and received at HIAS – volunteers will not be asked to provide personal addresses. Participants must be 18 or older.
In partnership with the Foundation for Jewish Camp.
