Liz Sweet, Esq.
Chief of Staff
Liz Sweet has served as Chief of Staff for HIAS since 2018. In this role, she leads organizational strategy, board relations, senior leadership accountability and internal communications. During her four years with HIAS, Liz has played a key role in leading HIAS’ participation in lawsuits challenging restrictions on the US refugee admissions program. She has served as Managing Attorney, General Counsel and Chief HR Officer.
Liz has designed and managed a range of programs serving immigrants and refugees. Prior to her work at HIAS, she worked at Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services where she directed the Access to Justice Program. She also managed initiatives piloting alternatives to detention. She developed pro bono immigration legal services programs both with HIAS and at the American Bar Association. She has represented vulnerable immigrants in a range of matters as well as shaping organizations’ roles in systemic litigation and policy advocacy.
Liz speaks Spanish and received her BA from the School for International Training and her JD from Northeastern University.
