Since the war in Ukraine began, the Republic of Moldova has become a key refuge for Ukrainians fleeing the conflict. More than 1 million people have crossed into Moldova during this period, with an estimated 120,000 refugees currently residing in the country.

HIAS, alongside local partners, plays a vital role in Moldova’s refugee response, focusing on multiple areas of support. This includes direct assistance, community engagement, mental health care, and legal assistance for vulnerable groups, particularly women and girls, ensuring their safety and protection from violence.

Moreover, HIAS strengthens the refugee support system by building the capacities of partners, women-led organizations, and local authorities.

Our Work

At HIAS Moldova, we empower underserved and vulnerable refugees by promoting economic empowerment, community engagement, and protection, and addressing violence against women and girls and mental health needs. We care deeply about the well-being of displaced people and provide a compassionate approach.

We protect refugees and displaced people by offering legal support, preventing and responding to violence against women and girls, looking after children’s rights, providing safe housing, ensuring access to food, and resettling refugees. These approaches are all tailored to local contexts and are designed to strengthen communities to support people forced to flee violence and persecution.
