Lena's Story

Lena Vine (previously Lena Vinokurova) emigrated from Moscow, Russia, in 1989. Although she was born in Moscow, Lena could very well have been born in Italy. Lena's grandfather, Avrum, spent 10 years living in Italy, but circumstances made him return to Russia. Avrum was a well known artist, sculptor, and furniture designer and manufacturer. When he was 17 years old, his work was already featured in Parisian exhibits.

Growing up, Lena was always looking for ways to express herself creatively. She studied piano, and was constantly singing and dancing. But it was only when she moved to the US and found a new world of freedom waiting for her, was she able to unleash her creativity and channel it into the art of songwriting.

Her creativity was molded by the difficult journey through Austria, Italy, and finally New York. It was shaped by the many different people that she met along the way, as well as organizations such as HIAS and NYANA that made her journey a little easier.

Today, Lena Vine is an accomplished singer, songwriter, and movie director whose work transcends time and space. She resides in Manhattan, NY and is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). Throughout her career, Lena has written over 300 songs that span many musical styles, such as blues, folk, Latin, dance, rock, and pop.

Lena’s repertoire includes songs written on a variety of topics, from philosophical to romantic, from émigré to historical, to current events. Currently, Lena is working on creating video clips for every one of her songs and has completed over 80 video clips.

Lena’s work is truly boundless and is written in Russian, English, and other languages. Language holds no bounds for Lena, and she sees it as a potential for additional linguistic freedom and expression. Every song is an artistic piece in itself and can speak to people on many different levels.
