On Wednesday, July 23rd, the House of Representatives will vote on H.R. 2214, the NO BAN Act. The NO BAN Act will repeal all versions of the Muslim Ban authorized through executive order over the past two years, and will amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to prohibit discrimination based on religion. Additionally, it will limit the broad executive authority that allowed the refugee and asylum bans by implementing stricter implementation requirements and greater congressional oversight.
HIAS has advocated for the NO BAN Act over the past year as a strong and unequivocal statement in support of reopening our country to refugees. We disagree, however, with new language that allows groups of individuals to be barred entry to the United States based on public safety in the effort to contain ‘communicable diseases’. This language, added at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, is unnecessary, and further stigmatizes immigrant communities. Despite this unnecessary language, the NO BAN Act repeals all versions of the Muslim Ban and we urge you to join us in telling your representative to vote “YES” on the NO BAN Act in its current form and to vote “NO” on any further amendments or changes.
STEP ONE: Find out who your representative is here.
STEP TWO: Use this sample script to call your Member of Congress:
Hi, my name is [First, Last] and I am calling to urge you to vote ‘YES’ on H.R. 2214, the NO BAN Act in its current form, and to vote ‘NO’ on any amendments or other changes to the bill when it comes to the floor for a vote on July 23rd.
The NO BAN Act will immediately end the Muslim bans, and will limit the broad executive authority that allowed for the refugee and asylum bans through stricter implementation requirements and greater Congressional oversight.
These bans have caused needless harm to thousands of Muslims, refugees, and asylum seekers who have been blocked from finding safety in the U.S. and remain separated from their families. It is time for Congress to put an end to these bans.
America must remain a beacon of religious freedom and safety. I urge you to support this critical legislation.
STEP THREE: Help us to generate as many phone calls as possible. Ask your family and friends to join in calling their elected officials.
