At a time of global refugee crisis with more displaced persons than at any time since World War II, it is critical for your elected officials to show continued support for protecting and welcoming refugees.
In the coming weeks, our government will determine the maximum number of refugees allowed to come to this country in the next year, and we need your help to make sure this number is at least 75,000.
Write to your Member of Congress and tell them to support a Presidential Determination of at least 75,000 refugees for the next fiscal year.
In the face of the largest global refugee crisis in modern times, the Presidential Determination represents the United States’ commitment to offering safe haven to the world’s refugees.
As your constituent, I urge you to actively encourage the Trump administration to welcome at least 75,000 refugees to the U.S. in Fiscal Year 2018.
The Refugee Act—which passed Congress unanimously in 1980—states that before each fiscal year, the president must consult with Congress to determine the maximum number of refugees that can be resettled in the U.S. for that year.
The “Presidential Determination” does not dictate how many refugees will end up arriving, but it sets a ceiling that serves as goal for the government and refugee resettlement agencies for the coming year.
To remain a global humanitarian leader, we must continue to welcome refugees who flee their homes in search of freedom from violence and persecution. People’s lives and futures are at stake.
Guided by our Jewish values and history, my community stands ready to welcome refugees. We believe that welcoming and protecting refugees makes us stronger as a community and as a country.
